Abstract | ||
The people of Burdwan district gave a strong and magnificent response to various Anti-British Movements and participated in various types of protests during Colonial period.The British rule brought a radical change in socio-political and economic spheres of Burdwan district, destroying the previous institutions and created new social groups and forces. These changes in socio-economic relations had wider impact on Indian Freedom Struggle in the form of Protests, Uprisings, Revolts and Rebellions, which began in the second half of 18th Century and Continued until the attainment of Independence of India. During late 19th century, the district witnessed formations of several associations, organizations which were organised by educationists, politicians, zamindars, and jotedars to promote their socio-political and intellectual activities. The late 19th century and the beginning of the early 20th century witnessed of the large number of Anjumans or Associations in the district to improve the conditions of the people.
